The Crown Fountain, 2004, glass& video, Millennium Park, Chicago
Spanish sculptor Plensa focuses on the human experience of standing in between. In this public art project, he works on an ancient symbol ‘fountain’ - a place where once people came to obtain water and to meet. Their images and ideas are reflected onto each other. A dialogue is created between the fountain and people, and among those people. This fountain consists of two 50-foot glass block towers at each end of a shallow reflecting pool. Video images from a broad social spectrum of Chicago citizens are projected on LED screens on towers. Water flows out of the sculptured open mouth.
Jaume Plensa (b. 1955 in Barcelona) currently resides between Barcelona and Paris. He studied in the "Llotja" School and the Escola Superior de Belles Arts de Sant Jordi. His work has been exhibited in numerous galleries and museums in Europe, the United States and Japan: Fundació Joan Miró, Barcelona (Spain); Henry Moore Sculpture Trust, Halifax (United Kingdom); the Arts Club Center for Contemporary Art, Chicago (USA), etc. Plensa’s upcoming personal exhibitions will be at The Nasher Sculpture Center, Dallas, USA in 2010 and Espoo Museum of Modern Art, Espoon Kaupunk, Finland in 2011.
